Environmental management in the modern age

Many scientists presented evidence that deterioration of the ecosystem may soon lead to its total collapse as the planet can’t take no more while its fighting the consequences of human activities. Global environmental threats including climate change, landscape changes, air and water pollution, resources scarcity became more evident in the last decade than ever before.

The system of planetary boundaries developed by Swedish-Australian scientists gives us a good understanding of the zones of highest risk, with 3 of them defined as critical, as we are approaching the ecological “apocalypse” of the planet Earth.

The human footprints are everywhere. It turned out that most prosperous economies based on heavy industries and with largest reserves of oil and gas have devastating effect on the environment. The industrial revolution in 20s set a beginning to a new era of high speed industrialization and economic development, in 1950s it reached the moment of great acceleration. In the last 2 decades we entered the “orange” phase when the global warming reached its record levels.

The biggest portion of heat coming from carbon emissions is absorbed in the world ocean. Being the natural cooling agent it is the ocean that saves everything alive. We need healthy oceans to sustain the future of our planet. Scientists measured the average water temperature in multiple locations, confirming 2 to 5 % rise in average temperature and unprecedented large scale events of coral bleaching and loss of biodiversity. The coral reefs are disappearing from the planet resulting in death of other marine species as they are mostly sensitive to temperature rise and not being able to evolve at such pace, just as many species of flora and fauna became extinct on the land. Climate change is also associated with increased occurrence of natural disasters and Greenland melting.

The necessity in introducing Carbon Law, carbon taxes and innovations in new clean energy technologies came along as the first priority in stabilizing the situation and stopping the environmental crisis . We have been taking credits from the global planet bank and not making any deposits back. The ecological issues have not been taken seriously enough for a long time and intense planet exploitation yet continued.

The progress in technology enabled scientists to design ultra modern equipment that can measure the changes in the environment more accurately and present scientific evidences rather than assumptions. Rise in public acceptance and yet painful realization of the human impact triggered some positive actions from the side of policy makers, in particular, who made significant steps in creating environmental management framework and its control. Tech revolution brought some remarkable achievements such as invention of electric car, deployment of renewable energy resources and other innovations, and the list will go on as we enter the new phase of making impact on the planet in the positive context.

One of the magazines Anthropocene, named after the anthropocene concept, has been one of the leading publishing companies that raise the environmental issues and call global organisations to action. The magazine is engaging the public with live stories that help people to perceive scientific information through prism of real life situations.  We see more and more documentaries revealing scientific facts and spreading awareness. A heart touching documentary “Chasing Coral” 2016 is one of them.

We got to deal with the consequences of rapid economic growth and demographic crisis. The main challenge for our generation is to find the way to accommodate future 9 bln population in such a way that we not only physically fit the size of the planet but the planet itself can bear this number of people, and the only way is sustainability.
